Inspired by decals like this one for $200, or this guy for $110, I figured I could just draw/paint something on the wall for FREE. So that's what I did.
First I taped up two "tree trunks" so their edges would be perfectly straight.

From there I started drawing, with pencil, possible leaf outspurts and the tops of the "trees." Thank goodness I had a rubber eraser, since that took the pencil marks off beautifully.

So then I used a black marker to outline the final design, then colored in the lines with black Valspar paint, which I already owned, using a fairly tiny paint brush.

So here you can see the middle of the process, with my (wobbly) outlines already up, and some already filled in with paint:
The finished product:
From afar:

I will probably go in and add more branches and leaves, since it looks a little sparse.

My edges are not perfect, the curves are a bit wompy, but I don't mind such imperfections. Also, you really have to be up close to really see the mistakes, and I don't suppose anyone is going to stand there and scrutinize it. Considering this was free and only took about an hour, it was the perfect solution for a wall that doesn't like nail holes.
Now the question is.... should I do something similar to the other side of window? Or is one side enough?

It's DIY Day, too! :)
Once again, you are SO artistically blessed! This looks great and most people (ME!) would have to pay for vinyl decals to get this look. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWow! I love that. I would leave it as it is, I like it kinda bare and I would definitely make another similar something on the other side. Maybe add a little birdie in a branch. =-)
ReplyDeleteLove it! You're talented AND brave to marker up your own wall like that. I like it how it is, it's not sparse at all, but I would add another similar one to the other side to match :-)
ReplyDelete1. i would definitely NOT add more leaves or branches.
ReplyDelete2. i would not do another one on the other side.
3. i fully intend to stand up close and scrutinize. soon.
p.s. the word verification thingy i have to type under this is "semic." is that even a word?
you lying whore.
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing!
Ummm....I'm speechless. It looks amazing. You.Are.Amazing. Can you come and write on my walls?
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing. I don't think it looks sparse at all. You are so talented!
ReplyDeleteI could never, ever freehand something like that. It looks awesome! I don't think I'd add one to the other side, but then I really like asymmetry.
ReplyDeleteHoly moley, that is GORGEOUS! I love it! Please come to my house next!! :) I wouldn't add another tree to the other side...but if you were going to add something, a small complementary image, like a couple of leaves blowing away, or a bird flying away might be cute. But, I love it as-is! :)
ReplyDeleteI am speechless. You are so creative and artistic. I don't think you should add another.
ReplyDeleteFirst you have to stop downplaying yourself. I don't think anyone can scrutinize your art work because it is so BEAUTIFUL! You can come to my house anytime and paint. I think you should def. so something on the other side. This is so beautiful :o)
ReplyDeleteLove it! and yes, totally add another.
ReplyDelete-Pamela
you are so incredibly talented. It's hard to paint freehanded on the walls- I've done it. It looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteWOW, that looks so good! I really like how those wall decals look, but I don't think I could make one myself! I kind of like it just on the one side, I think.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a stunning accent to your fabulous guest bedroom! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely do the other side. You could make it bigger or coming more towards the center of the room. Or add something to it. Just a thought. So its the same, yet special.
ReplyDeleteGreat work!!!!!
That is gorgeous! There is nothing more to say than that!!!!! Absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeletethis is wonderful! I would never dare to do something like this. And don't add more branches or leaves it is perfect like this.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive!!
ReplyDeleteholy crap, you rock! wow....
ReplyDeleteWOW! It makes my little painting I'm about to blog about look really bad. :)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't add any more leaves or branches, but as a balance-obsessed accountant I would totally add one to the other side.
AMAZING!!!
ReplyDeletebeautiful! but just an fyi for the future, if your plaster walls don't like nails, give "ooks" a try, they sell them at BBB and HD/Lowes. It helped my plaster walls!
ReplyDeleteLOVE :)
ReplyDeleteI would do something complementary on the other side. Similar, but not identical. And don't you dare add any more branches or leaves to this one!
I think it looks perfect!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely ADORE it!!! I don't think it needs any more branches either.
ReplyDeleteI think one on the other side would look great.
This is AMAZING!!!! I'm so incredibly jealous of your artistic ability!! I agree with previous comments. Don't add more branches to existing tree, add another tree, perhaps with a bird or two.
ReplyDelete1. Love your blog!!
ReplyDelete2. My idea: You could put black frames w/ b&w pics down the other side to balance it out.
3. Wanna be Following Friends? I do ;)
That is too cute. I wouldn't change a thing on it. I also don't know about adding another one to the other side, you don't want it to be too 'matchy'. I think the black picture frames hung vertically, as suggested before, would be lovely on that side.
ReplyDeleteMy girl crush on you grows by the day.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, it's perfect. And I wouldn't do another one, but I love the idea of a bird and maybe some leaves just to complement it.
You are so talented!!! My cat wants to live with you instead. He told me that.
Those are gorgeous!!!!
ReplyDeleteLOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE it!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Sariah
I love it! I would leave it just how it is, it looks so amazing.
ReplyDeletelooks awesome! yes, definitely do the other side too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderfully talented lady you are!! This is absolutely beautiful. Pat @ junkblossoms
ReplyDeleteWow, I love it! It's beautiful! You are amazing and so talented!
ReplyDeleteI vote you don't add any more leaves or branches, and I think you should add a little something to the other side but not necessarily another tree.
How pretty!! You did an awesome job. I'm very jealous of your artistic ability, that's some serious "wow factor" right there!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by my blog. I'm really enjoying yours!
You are so talented! Seriously, Sarah. Wow.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't do the same thing on the other side... maybe something a little different on that third wall, though.
Yay! I was purusing yesterday and threw your blog in my favorites list immediately. You're pretty darn awesome there lady.
ReplyDeleteI would leave it on one side but maybe somehow bring up some decor on the other side, either a taller lamp, skinny bookcase, stack up some old luggage, tall tree branches (real ones) in a big vase...just something to even out the height, but actually, I like it as is..if it were me, I'd leave it be, but part of that is because I'm lazy and can never finish a project.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time to visit your blog, I came over from Kimbas.
Your painting is fabulous hon, what a great job. I definitely think you should do the same on the other wall and then maybe just do a small branch or something about the curtains or make your tree limb twine around to the other side.
You are very talented and that looks awesome.
Have a great day,
Blessings, Nellie
Ooh, I love this! great job!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. Looks very professional, too.
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT! What if you moved the bedside table to the left side so it would balance out the black visually?
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job. It is gorgeous! You go girl
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love what you did! What talent you have. My two cents on duplicating a little something, someting on the other side of the wall would be to stay small if you are going to do it. You don't want to overload the wall, and make it too busy.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the Frog tape goes, I removed it when it was dry, and still got the bleed through. I did my painting over two days so I think that might have been the problem since the tape didn't seem to adhere as well the second day.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
CAAAUUUUTE!
