Here's how it looked shortly after move-in day:

This is how I had it decorated this morning......

But thanks to all of your advice, I finally took the plunge and painted our bricks WHITE this afternoon!

The things on the mantle required some DIY projects, so I'll show those to you, too.
In the left-hand photo below, you'll see the brass fireplace things (what are they called? grates? fireplace pillars? fireplace guards? c'mon, they've gotta have an official name).... I found those in my basement, covered in dust and cobwebs. Nothing a little chrome spray paint from Rustoleum can't handle (after I wiped them down well, of course):

Here's a close-up of my drawing on the mantle. The frame was originally brown, the inner layer of matting was burgundy and the outer matting was cream, but I sprayed it all black. I did the drawing with my skinniest ink pen on white cardstock.
I spent a good 15 minutes -- no exaggerating -- agonizing over what kind of fake flower or plant to get at Michaels for that white vase on the end of the mantle. The kind I finally chose was %40 off, so it only ended up costing $4 for a pretty thick sprig. It came with bright green leaves, which I found to look a little too fake, so I just pulled them off. But you can see the leaves here:
This is one of my favorite elements of my new mantle. This round navy vase that I got from Goodwill underwent a transformation:

And here is the cost breakdown for all of the things I used. (Remember my candlesticks?)
Just around $35, since I already owned all the paint and supplies.Much better:

My brother came over a few weeks ago and assessed the mirror situation. I think we'll leave it up for now, even though we might have discovered a way to remove it if we want to. And I hope he'll help me build a frame to at least give it a more updated feel.
So, the mirror frame will probably be the last step for a while, otherwise, this is just about done. My brother also measured on either side of the fireplace for if/when we ever want to put shelves in, which I would LOVE to do, but I would rather spend my money on a new couch or something at this point. Shelves come later. :)
(Oh and P.S. we have fake plants because my cat, Conn, will seek out all live foliage and eat it... then throw it up. On my hardwood. Idiot.)
Your mantle looks absolutely amazing! And I love that you got all your decor from goodwill which happens to be at the top of my list of favorite stores!
ReplyDeleteI'll be posting a goodwill night stand transformation this evening sometime-you should check it out!
Great job and I can't wait to hear what you decide to do with the mirror!
Looks awesome! Love your mantlescape too (is that a word?) oh & just to share in case you didn't know, Lowe's/Home Depot sell mirror framing kits & they are pretty reasonably priced.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the way the white bricks lighten up the whole look. It looks so clean and fresh now. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks gorgeous. :) Love the white brick! Oh - and that sucks about your cat, but I'm kinda glad to hear that I'm not the only one with a pet who will eat things that are not food! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the new look! I have been toying with painting our red brick for months. My husband is in the "not so much" camp, and I am in the "must do" camp. Your post may help me tip the scales. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I just reviewed your stain post. Did you remove all the prior finish before you applied the new stain on both of your pieces? I am working with a sidetable that I was able to remove most of the stain, but there are still some places on the legs that I can't remove. I am thinking of painting it now, but would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!
Yay, I'm so glad you took the plunge and painted it! Kev was ok with it I guess? Let this be a lesson to him to always do what you say ;)
ReplyDeleteIt looks FAB!
LOVE the painted brick.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agonize all the time over faux plants, too. I can never make the leap and buy them, though. I'm just riddled with indecision!
100% better! I LOVE the white brick! It looks amazing...as usual!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a huge transformation! I love it! And your drawing is awesome, as well as the round vase, turned black.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful transformation all-around. I love that you used your home's original fireplace "gate" pieces but updated them to be more modern. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI love how the fireplace looked painted in white. So striking and pretty now. I also love all the changes you've made to the mantel as well. Great finds you've redone.
ReplyDeleteThe bricks look amazing! And I love all of your other decorating updates, too.
ReplyDeleteMy kitty has a thing for string, twine, ribbon, anything like that. And then he throws it up. You would think he would learn...
This looks really great! I can't believe what a difference painting the brick made. It took it from "nice" to "wow!"
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing! I am very impressed. :-)
