But what I didn't know was that I was capable of stringing together obscenities crude enough to make Joe Biden blush. Between staples jutting out and cutting my fingers, or the fabric not doing what I wanted it to (read: me not being able to stretch it effectively), I consistently felt irritated throughout this stupid-ass project and voiced my frustrations without hesitation.
I should have initially taken one good look at the couch and decided not to even go there. But no, my hatred for the red slipcover overcame any good sense I should have had.
Here is what I had to work with:
Those are WICKED curves.
Here were my main obstacles, with curves being the toughest:
I just wanted it to be as simple as possible (read: I wanted to be lazy about it). Knowing I could just [attempt to] staple my fabric over the existing floral crap, I set out with these tools (pliers and the staple gun/staples being the most important):

I began by ripping off the back piping. Man did that have lots of long, ninja-like staples that attacked my fingers.

Hence the scratches/injuries:

After pulling out all the staples and saying lots of curse words, Conn decided to defend his momma and make enemies with the piping. He was being cute so of course I had to pause and observe:
Next step: staple the black fabric to the back along the same line where I had just removed the piping. I had to use my hammer on most of the staples to flatten them down/drive them in:
And cut away the excess fabric above the staple line. So far, so good:
ENTER KITTY PROTESTER NUMBER TWO:
When I wrapped the black fabric over the top, here is where a whole sequence of cuss words came flying from my mouth. For one thing, I leaned up against the back with my knees, which had just been kneeling in a dusty spot or something, and so I contaminated the back with dust. And second, the two humps in the middle were ridiculous and did NOT want to be covered:

I got really annoyed/bored/impatient/distracted at this point and went off to do something much more rewarding, and haven't really come back since.
Here is how the couch looks as of right now.

It. is. pathetic. You can tell me, I won't even deny it.
I give up. If this were more of a squarish couch, I could have done it. And quite frankly, I don't even like the shape of this couch, so why am I bothering with it?
To my ugly couch with its hidden staples, I say SCREW YOU. One day, I will take great pleasure in abandoning you by the dumpster. And one day, I will take even greater joy in burning the slipcover. But for now, we're just going to pretend this never happened. I'm going to try to salvage some of the black fabric and will continue to curse this stupid, hideous couch.
Lesson learned: leave major reupholstery projects to the pros.
You gave it a valiant effort, Sarah, battling beast and burden along the way. I know what you said about slipcovers, but we have one that looks really nice. I can't imagine living without a washable slipcover with all my animals. Our slipcover is from Sure Fit and is similar to these:

I agree that a lot of them can look hideously ugly, but I like the way that ours stretches in one piece. Jenn has a similar one too and hers looks really nice as well. I think it's two pieces, one for the cushions and one for the rest.
Oh, man! I was really rooting for this project to turn out amazing. I agree with Mary, though--you get an A for effort!
ReplyDeleteHilarious! I feel your pain I have a chair sitting in the corner of my bedroom (about 5 months now) that I refuse to do anything with becaus I got so irritated while doing it I almost tossed the damn thing out the window!!! I love the shape of that couch and have been looking for a similar one but refuse to do it myself... I vote to hire a professional! It may cost a pretty penny but in the end it may be worth it!
ReplyDeleteMan...I was hoping you would be victorious as you were my inspiration to do a chair. Now I am skeeerd!
ReplyDeleteFogot to mention that at least the cat had fun! Husband said.."Steak knives are for meat you silly rabbit". LOL
ReplyDeletethanks for making me feel better about my failure ;)
ReplyDeleteand onelifemanyjourneys- i laughed out loud at the steak knife comment. hey, ya gotta use what you've got lying around the house sometimes! :)
I think if you just pull more fabric down the back of the couch where the curves are, and splice the fabric at angles for ease, it might fit the curves easier (like when making a pattern or sewing a dress). Huge A for trying though- that looks hard!!
ReplyDeleteprops to you for even trying, i wouldn't have even tried! sorry it didn't work out :)
ReplyDeleteLol this brought back memories of my chair reupholstery project that I finished a few months ago. It was TOUGH! I had never done it before from start to finish....don't get me wrong...I had "started" a few upholstery projects...just not finished any of them. lol so I was determined!!! Check out craigslist for a more worthy and easy contender for reupholstery. You might find something that you like the fabric on already and doesn't need it! Craigslist is my go-to for affordable everything!
ReplyDeleteAh, I feel your pain! I have never tried upholstering something that big, but even the small, seemingly easy projects are spattered with staple injuries and swear words. =)
ReplyDeleteI feel for you. I wrote a nearly identical post last summer when I recovered an old chair. There was lots and lots of cursing involved and my chair was all straight lines. I know I'd never have the courage to take on your sofa. I have to give you tons of credit for going for it though. Better luck next time.
ReplyDeleteThis project just validated a decision I made earlier today. Saw a VERY COOL chair at GW. Lots of curves and cool details. I looked it over. Shopped more, came back, looked it over again and decided against it. To much coolness going on for me.... Bummer about your couch!
ReplyDeleteI hate slipcovers too and I hate projects that I think or hope are simple and turn out not to be! :(
ReplyDeletesorry the couch is giving you so much trouble! boo! LOL
This is a big bummer! (I have to say though, I was laughing out loud reading it - sorry!) I definitely give you props for taking on the project though. If I ever get the crazy urge to reupholster a couch by myself, I will think of you. :)
ReplyDeleteHeh. This post made me feel better about some of my mistakes. But at least you can laugh about it later! SO, new couch on the horizon, then?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think it was great that you even tried. Would it help to say I really enjoyed reading this post?? I mean that in a nice way!
ReplyDeleteSarah, I was so excited to see you post about the couch! Don't give up yet! I have an idea about the curves in the back of the couch...stuff them. Perhaps you could fashion some cushions that complement the shape of the curves and then somehow attach them to OG fabric.
ReplyDeleteJust an idea.
I am still to chicken to try upholstery. It seem so daunting.
ReplyDeleteDesign Intervention blog, she is a pro and has lots of advice so if you decide to keep up with it she might be able to help you.
Thanks for dropping by and commenting on my chair. It was definitely not easy but very satisfying in the end. Maybe after you have the slipcover for a while and forget the first attempt, you will be up to trying upholstering it again. The curves cause quite a headache but I think you can do it. Good luck!
