Basement Improvements

It's not always all fun and games and spray paint at the Hennessey's House. I am off work all week, and while I am determined to do fun things and also relax, there are some practical projects that must get tackled. I started with the basement, which had been turned in to my studio. I must have thrown away 15 empty spray paint cans, no joke.

Surprisingly, reorganizing and cleaning didn't take very long. The before photos are on the left, after photos on the right:

Most noticeable change. That drop-cloth was tied to some of the ceiling pipes to create a spray-paint background.

So here's the basement as of right now:

Kevin and I are talking about what we can do to improve this space and make it look less creepy... we think Drylok'ing the walls bright white and painting the concrete floor a nice fresh gray would make a huge improvement. I'm also thinking of painting all the ceiling stuff black.

Have you done anything successful to your basement to improve its appearance? I'd love to hear your stories and suggestions!

  1. this is expensive, but if you can find it cheaper, it's a good basement floor spruce up. it looks cool (with the squares and such) and if you have a wet floor (basements are damp), it keeps your feet dry. google "locker mat" or "shower mat."

  2. You should check out what Dan and Jess did to their basement! We went by on Sunday to see the babies and their basement is awesome! I think that if you are going to do something, you should go all out and finish the basement- I saw those commercials where they can finish your basement in one day, but I don't know how quality it is.

  3. It's amazing how much just a little bit of organization can make such a huge difference!

We're just finishing up a complete basement overhaul. We took it from a not very comfortable or useable space and turned it into our living room, a laundry room/office and a really great and functional bathroom. It's been a long project, but we're finally nearing the end. I've been documenting it on my blog... with more progress posts coming this week.

Look forward to seeing what you decide to do down there!

  4. Well, we don't actually have a basement! Just a garage, unfortunately. I would love some extra storage space though!

  5. haha... your basement is not creepy. we drylok'd the walls in our basement... we used beige though. painting the floors would also look great! our basement ceiling was painted black by the previous owners, thank goodness!

  6. Painting concrete floors looks great for about 10 minutes - then moisture and walking on it take it's toll. I vote for inexpensive ceramic tile! Doesn't that sound like fun?? Or, perhaps a concrete stain would be better...

  7. I love my basement! Cool in summer, warm in winter. All I know with basements is if it weren't for my dehumidifier, I'd be at a loss. I've trash picked a few that have all worked, BUT, apparently, if you find a non-working one, it's often some small little inexpensive thing that needs to be replaced.

  9. I have had that exact basement before. There's not much variety in floor plans in south city, is there? It is always a little creepy after dark. I still live in south city, but I'm in a newer (1950's) bungalow with a slightly less creepy basement. Same issues though! I am planning to black out the ceiling and paint the floor a dark red, white walls. I recently saw a friend's basement with the dark red floor and flipped. It looks gorgeous!

  10. Basements scare me. I think it's because the one at the house I grew up in is so scary. It's where the serial killer lives in the winter (he lives behind the pool in the summer). I've made Jason go in all the basements at the houses we've looked at. If we're serious about making an offer, I'll consider checking out the basement. Oh, and no advice on how to make it less creepy.
