It's the stupid dwarf-like Japanese Maple in the middle of our backyard:
This picture ^ is pretty much how our backyard looks now, yes all the grass is practically dead. But if you need to be reminded of how overgrown the (grass and) Japanese Maple gets during the Spring, well here you go:
Because it grows so low to the ground, it is such a pain in the ass to mow or even weed-wack around it. And you can't really tell from the pictures, but the ground is somewhat recessed around the base of the tree, so it collects leaves, weeds, and is a haven for bunnies. It is my opinion that the tree is just dumb. I want to hack it down and try to level out the yard right there, maybe plant a REAL tree that will actually grow TALL more toward the back fenceline.
What would you do?

Hello! Love your blog. :)
ReplyDeleteCan you sell it on Craig's List? Japanese maples are quite expensive, at least here in NM. Maybe someone would be willing to dig it up for you if you sold it for cheap.
Happy Thanksgiving.

That is the weirdest looking tree - I have never seen a japanese maple (or any other non-bonsai tree, for that matter ;)) grow that low to the ground. In a way, it's kind of hilarious.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck, and Happy Thanksgiving!
I think you should either have someone come pick it up (like the previous commenter said, you can get some money for it!) or relocate it to the fenceline and use it as ground cover. It really is cool, but it is not practical to have in the middle of the grass. As a shrub in a planting bed along the perimeter, it would work out great. It might be impossible to move though, depending on how big the root ball is!
ReplyDeleteI think they would come in and dig up the whole yard and put in a pond and...........
ReplyDeleteIf it were me, I love Japanese Maples, I would make a large natural area along part of the fence and the come around the tree so you don't have to mow under it. That is just me though. We don't have much grass because we keep mulching more and more. I love plants and natural areas! Good luck.
but where would all the bunnies live?? lol
ReplyDeleteCan you dig it up and put it elsewhere? then put something nice and tall there?
Then the bunnies, nature and you would be happy!
Wow, that is a really cool tree! I agree with the other commenters, I can see how it would be a pain to have that in the middle of your yard, but it might look really cool somewhere else!
ReplyDeleteIf you want to save it: You could try to train it to grow UP rather than out. THis can't be done until the Spring, however and can be a SEVERAL year process.
ReplyDeleteGoogle, but it would entail cutting the branches that grow out, thus enabling the branches growing UP. We have a similar type tree in our front- a bulky weeping cherry. If not on that thing constantly trimming to train it... it would be a mess and quickly.
If not- I say dig in up and don't feel guilty. Remedy a Mama Nature Karmic slap by planting a new tree... ;)
PS- it will get MUCH, MUCH worse before it will get better.
