Embroidery As Art

Embroidered "pictures" inside embroidery hoops themselves are becoming such a huge trend lately, and I must say, it is one I support!

For a while, the trend was to hang the embroidery hoops with beautiful patterned fabrics stretched inside, like these:

That makes a really cool statement, but I love the fact that artists and sewers are personalizing compositions such as these:

Wow, this one is incredible, a true work of art (with the $250 price tag to prove it!):
That giraffe CRACKS me up.

Here is where I out myself as a 5-year-old in the body of a 27-year-old. Yes, I bought this awesome and hilarious and spectacular embroidered piece of wonderfulness:

So when I was in Goodwill this week, I saw a 10" embroidery hoop for a buck and snagged it, thinking I'd give this whole trend a shot.

I got home and found some solid gray fabric to stretch inside the hoop.
Thank GOD I was an avid friendship-bracelet-maker as a kid, and that I saved all that thread... luckily I had a ton of colors left and just went to town. No pattern, no set idea in mind. I just started sewing......

Eeeeee!! I am so so pleased with how this is going!!

Dudes, I have never embroidered in my life. I am just winging it.
Is the backside supposed to look like this???

And yes, of course, I am rocking some swirls in there.
This is not a finished product, but when I do wrap up my first piece, I'll be sharing it here of course.

This has been SO SO fun! It is a stress-relieving, mindless activity and it's something I am quickly becoming OBSESSED with. Go find some hoops, colorful embroidery thread and go to town. Need inspiration? This blog [Feeling Stitchy] is wonderful! Or, if you don't want to sew them yourself, there are lots of wonderful etsy artists who are filling their shops with them!!

  6. Nice job! Yes, the back looks like that!

There are people who master making the backs look as neat as the fronts, if you can imagine that. I had one such lady embroider a few things for me to add to some aprons I was selling and the back of her work was crazy-impeccable.

  8. There are not words for the jealous rage I feel at the fact that you can just randomly pick up some thread, some cloth, a hoop, and a needle and just DO that. It's gorgeous. Jerk. :o) -Carly

  11. I was also an avid friendship-bracelet maker. I remember the look of horror on my mother's face when she found that I had discovered her trough of embroidery thread that she used to, um, I don't know EMBROIDER (belts, ornaments, all kinds of stuff - she's crafty!) and made gobs of bracelets for all of my swim club friends. (Friendship bracelet making was the only thing that make swim conferences days bearable. That, and copious amounts of Tangy Taffy.)

  12. Great job! I can't believe it's your first stab at embroidery. I have a fun book called Sublime Stitching by embroidery guru, Jenny Hart. I'll bring it by the office so you can peek. Get yourself a nice disappearing pen from the fabric store. Those help, lots!
