A Freaking Helpful Paintint Tip

BEFORE DOING ANY PAINTING, ALWAYS STIR YOUR PAINT!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Tuesday I decided to paint my office. So I headed to Lowe's and picked out the color "Livid Violet" by Valspar. [Seriously, I dare you to not be seduced by that splendid name.]

I got home and started taping and cutting in with the brush, literally just 20 minutes after the paint color was mixed up for me and shaken at Lowe's. So I figured, it was sufficiently stirred, so naturally, I shouldn't have to do it!

But when I poured my paint in the roller container thing, I noticed it was swirly, so I stirred it then (not even thinking that would effect anything. Oh how stupid.).

This was taken as the paint was drying, so I had no reason to believe that the walls, which were rolled on, wouldn't dry as dark as the edges.

WRONG.

This picture is terrible. The lighting is off, the things inside the office are messy, but you can really see the noticeable contrast of rolled-on parts and where I cut in with the un-stirred paint.

I do not have the energy to go back and re-paint all those edges. So I'm leaving it.... for now. It looks terrible. And I cringe every single time I look at it.

I really would kick my own ass if I could. :/

  1. Oooh no! I did that once too...apparently my Dad hadn't beaten that rule into my thick head back then. He has now. ;)

Hmmm, maybe you can convince your husband to do it?

  2. Whoa. Honestly, if you came right from the store where they shook it up, you should've been fine and that shouldn't have happened. I'd rethink that brand of paint. In either case, I'm sorry that happened to you!

  3. I would think about kicking the person that mixed the paint, not yourself!! Then, when finished, supervise as they repaint! So sorry this happened!

  4. Oh, NO! I would never think to stir just-mixed paint, either. But I do love that color(s)! :-)

  6. yeah, I actually re-stir the paint before each pore into the pan. I made this mistake once, and I hate painting so much I vowed NEVER AGAIN!

  7. I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out.

Also, I love that your paint is angry. So angry, it's livid. :)

  9. Holy cow. That's hard to believe, but you have the pictures to prove it! I will definitely remember this next time I'm in a hurry and don't feel the need to stir the paint. (But still, you'd think the store-stirring would have been enough.) Thanks for sharing this painful lesson with us.

  11. GAH! I am still living with this lesson in my living room....makes me "livid" every time I walk past it too. Sorry!

  12. 1. I just found your blog via Better After and LOVE it.

    2. I think you and I were simultaneously suffering from Valspar's "new" primer-paint combo product. I painted my kitchen with it this winter and got the same crappy results. We ended up having to use coat 1 as "primer" and buy the same color in a different formula (Kitchen/Bath) to do any of the final work. Grrr.
