It involves scoping out your nearest thrift store for simple vases and a few craft supplies.
I started with these 3 vases, which cost me a total of $7 for all of them. I will use the white vessel as my example for this post, since I transformed the other 2 into gifts that I will actually give, and I don't want to spoil the surprise in case the gift receivers read the blog. :)

Since I didn't care for the color of the red and coral vase, I primed and spray-painted them a different color. Here they are with a coat of primer:

But with my white container, I left it alone. As is, it was the perfect blank canvas:

For $3.99 a piece, I invested in several Sharpie oil paint markers. You can get a wide range of tip sizes, and the one I'm working with here is an extra fine point since I wanted to be able to draw a lot of little details.
I started drawing a swirling design all over the vase.......
And once I was finished, I sealed it with this very handy spray glaze, which I found at Michael's for $6.99.
Finished:

This one, I'm keeping, but I've finished the other two vases and will be gifting them. Yesterday I hit up Goodwill and came home with three more vases and I plan to transform them as well.If you're not artistically inclined, it's even easy to do a very simple mod design on a vase or plate. And because you can buy paint markers with bigger tips, you can also go for a much bigger design, like a vine with big leaves or the zig-zag one below:

So there you have it. Are you giving any personalized DIY presents this holiday season??
Miss Sarah, do you understand how talented you are? Seriously girl you are amazing! I am going to buy one of those markers tomorrow, thanks for the awesome project! Oh and btw will you link it up to my look what I found Friday post so I can feature it next week?

That looks fantastic! Like something that would cost a lot in any store. You are such a beautiful artist and such a creative mind. Love it!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing Sarah!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea what to expect, but when I saw the final result... I went "Nuh. Uh." I don't know why I was in such disbelief... ALL of your projects have such fabulous results!
(After Christmas, can you make us jealous and post pictures of the other two transformations??)
LOVE your vase;)
ReplyDeleteAnd I love reel good markers too!
So many possibilities;)
Lovely greetings...
I'm so super jealous of your talent. I'm a rabid crocheter, and I think this year I'm going to make market bags to give. It's sometimes a bit of a struggle finding gifts to make and give once everyone you know has a scarf...
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't know why google thinks my name is "Smidget" instead of "Carly." Must be a vestige from the times in college I can't remember...
ReplyDeleteWow, that is GORGEOUS! I am so jealous and also a little (okay, a lot) intimidated of your artistic abilities! I would definitely have to go for a more basic design, but I'm not even sure I could handle that! How did you draw all that without it smudging??
ReplyDeleteShazam! That is freakin awesome! I might have to give this a try.......or you should put them on your etsy.
ReplyDeleteWOW. Just gorgeous, Sarah, and what a wonderful gift.
ReplyDeleteSARAH!!! HOW FABULOUS ARE U? VERY!!!!!!! I'm not EVEN going to try to attempt this because I know It'll b a hot a.. mess lol So i wil drool over yours! What a Great GIFT!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my word. I can't believe how perfect your design looks! It's definitely a one-of-a-kind, piece of genuine artwork. I'm sure your gift-receivers are going to be delighted!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the pens? I haven't seen those. I love your swirly designs so much. Mine always go all wonky.
ReplyDeleteI'm making a variety of gifts this year-- pillowcase tote bags, coffee filter flowers, some fabric crayon rolls for my daughter and some of her friends... and whatever else I come up with between now and Dec 25.
GORGEOUS! I love, love, love it! This is gallery-worthy art for sure.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful and unique gift idea! The one you made is gorgeous! Have you thought about adding these to your ETSY shop? They would be a great addition!
